Mount Sinai’s TIAA Cref Retirement Plan

Mount Sinai boasts an extensive team of medical specialists and research facilities, from primary care physician offices and specialist physician practices, multi-specialty centers, home healthcare support and hospice services, cardiac/vascular programs; oncology treatment centers; transplant surgery programs as well as state-of-the-art imaging centers featuring 3T MRI technology to comprehensive outpatient clinical laboratories – not to mention its state-of-the-art imaging centers offering 3T MRI technology – offering patient care as well as tax deferred investments options through its TIAA Cref retirement plan.

The Hospital offers a defined benefit pension plan, which offers retirees with a monthly retirement benefit at a specified age. This benefit is calculated using an extensive formula which takes into account years of service, salary information and other variables. As long as healthcare costs stay below the defined benefit ceiling, retirees do not need to contribute into this plan, while any increases are passed on as costs go up.

Mount Sinai Hospital notified Zellin in January 2002 of an increase in retiree healthcare premiums to cover anticipated costs. When receiving this notice, Zellin contacted Shirley Herdoiza Alban (“Alban”) of their Human Resources Department to inquire further into this increase. Alban explained that as part of its defined benefit pension plan, Mount Sinai had to pass along increased healthcare costs like premium increases for retiree health coverage to employees such as Zellin as part of an effort to offset rising expenses.

Provide for mediation, arbitration or other dispute resolution in the event that an issue cannot be settled through mutual agreement between the parties. This provision aims to avoid strikes, lockouts or any other drastic workplace actions which might disrupt patient care or the operations of an institution.

Mount Sinai will continue its good faith efforts in 2022 to resolve issues regarding Postdocs without resorting to arbitration or legal action, consistent with what was done during our NLRB case; reiterates the importance of upholding high ethical standards when conducting research on vulnerable populations; and establishes new job-related provisions for international researchers:

Mount Sinai will reimburse Postdocs up to $1,250 in travel costs related to renewing visa stamps; make reasonable accommodations available should an emergency prevent travel; and hold open for 60 days any postdoc who had all appropriate paperwork but was denied entry into the U.S.
